| Saturday, October 25th 2025, 8pm. | There will be a great series of events coming up for the Autumn, and Galway Literary Events is getting the machinery cranked up again. First off, an event that will be of great interest to students of poetry, and local history. Through a series of coincidences in early 2017, Jim Fahy, the renowned RTE broadcaster and journalist, discovered that Michael McGovern, born in Williamstown in 1847, had become a very well known Labour Poet in the US. He enlisted the aid of Eileen and Leo Finnegan of Williamstown Heritage Society in researching McGovern’s life and an extremely interesting story emerged. Unfortunately, ill health was to strike Jim, and he passed away on January 14, 2022, having just completed the draft of the book. The final editing of the book has just been carried out by Eileen and Leo. The book is called The Puddler Poet: The Life, Times and Poetry of Michael McGovern. This biography, which is a fascinating read, involves two immensely talented literary figures, McGovern the poet from an earlier time, and Fahy the journalist from more recent times, two outstanding wordsmiths from different eras. The book is being launched in the Sports Complex, Williamstown (F45DT73) on Saturday, October 25 at 8pm. All are welcome. | |||
